Elections

Student Legal Fund Society

From the rather sparse SLFS website, the society’s mission is “to provide advisory, legal, and financial assistance to initiate and continue advocacy, lobbying, and litigation, to improve education and access to education at UBC and other such matters of law which set broad precedent and concern UBC students.”

In 2009, the SLFS put forward $18 500 to the BC Civil Liberties Association to fund Know Your Rights and Legal Observer workshops for UBC students leading up to the Olympics. That sum is merely a tiny fraction of the $250 000 they have accumulated over years of the Student Legal Fund fee, charged by the AMS. There have been no moves made to spend this money in the foreseeable future, and the money will continue to accumulate until the SLFS sees a case it finds worth taking on.

Essentially, this year’s election will be an acclamation vote as there are only six candidates running to fill six seats. All six candidates are running on the Students for Responsible Leadership slate, which has committed itself to expanding the Know Your Rights workshops started last year to focus on students’ academic rights.

The candidates are:
Anthony Bryson
AJ Hajian
John C. M. MacLean
Aaron Sihota
Jordan Stewart
Kyle Warwick

  1. All six? I only recognize 4 of the 6 names as SRLUBC.

  2. The SRL website is from last year’s election, hence why it’s out of date. All 6 candidates this year are indeed part of the SRL slate.
