Shit UBC Says: Take our Money and Trust Us

UBC C+CP’s penchant for playing fast and loose with development rules has necessitated a revision of the UNA Neighbours Agreement. In formulating the plan and pushing it forward, UBC has lied to the UNA and promised them free money to gain their cooperation in a plan that would allow for the quiet expansion of private housing on campus, going against all the plans that are on the books.

UNA Lurches Forward With Plan to Extend Reach Beyond Its Borders

The University Neighbourhoods Association (UNA) is working with UBC to allow for the possibility of the UNA imposing its by-laws on and collecting revenues from residents who don’t live within its borders, an unsettling way of expanding its jurisdiction.

University Boulevard planning, six years later. Plus ca change…

The idea that there should be housing in this area has been the central (centrally contested, and centrally unchanged) ingredient in the U-Blvd area from the get go. But it’s still expensive, it’ s still on top of a polluting bus loop, and it’s still fundamentally adding a lot of residential density to the academic core and gateway of the campus.

UBC Maximizing Housing Density by Minimizing Legal Compliance

Would UBC break the law to fulfill their market housing ambitions?

Yes!

Bye-Bye MacInnes Field?

C+CP has been working towards a new aquatic centre on MacInnes Field, outside of the “Area Under Review” process. The site they’re pushing for severely restricts the options that can be discussed by the working group and the public. It hinders efforts to come up with innovative solutions for all stakeholders. Hiding behind a consultant’s report makes it far more difficult for the broader community to comment on the options and the issues. Basically, everything they’re saying they don’t want the process to represent.

Gage South Petition: UBC Starts to Respond

Anyone even remotely familiar with UBC decision-making knows that a decision isn’t made at the time the decision is made. It’s made well before the decision becomes official, and usually before public consultation occurs. Based on everything that was happening behind-the-scenes, we believed that the *actual* decision point for Gage South was coming up fast.

The Campaign for an Academic Gage South

We believe the “Academic” designation for Gage South is sensible and puts the academic mission of the university first. It’s a university – core land should be recognized as such and we would rather not see UBC’s land grant squandered in unfortunate ways.
