I’m not sure about what his actual feelings on the issue are. Presumably, he cares at least a bit about the issue if he’s spent the year working on it. It would seem odd, however, that he genuinely supports the cause if he has to resort to threats to a group he’s been working with in order to try to garner more votes, nor would such intimidation be expected from a candidate who truly supports a cause, as then threatening to withdraw support seems a bit contradictory to his beliefs.

I don’t think you can really phrase an offer in such terms, though- at least, not if you want to preserve any respect. If he is to have a working relationship, how are they going to get along? I think that even if his intentions were good, saying what he said is atrocious- it undermines his ability to do his job, and certainly makes him seem like he is threatening them.

When I talked to him he said that the FotF had just told him that they would never endorse him and he was trying to get them to come around by telling them that he could help them. I think it was meant to be an offer, not a coersion. That being said… well, the clip speaks for itself.

From what I infer, he was speaking at greater length to the Friends of the Farm. He must have made a promise and asked for the endorsement, whereupon someone must have asked him a question (apparently a two-part question) along the lines of ‘would you do this [work to save the farm] anyway?’.

That’s just an educated guess, but for the most part I agree with you Maria – this isn’t a sound byte, it’s 1:39 of him responding to a question.

I’d love to hear how exactly he was taken out of context… it seems like his statements speak for themselves. Unless, of course, he was told to role-play some scenario… :P In any case, I think an explanation from him would be interesting.
